The colours of winter

The colours of winter

SALEWA is showing its colours for all its apparel ranges for the winter season. Once again, the mountain sports specialist from Bolzano has been inspired by the uniqueness of the Alpine colour palette. When white sunlight passes through a prism, the colours of winter are revealed: all the hues of the rainbow. The AlpineXtreme, Alpine Active and 5Continents collections for winter 2010/11 manifest a spectrum of shades of refreshing luminous colours, with leading tones taken from the Free Ski Mountaineering product line: chlorophyll/raspberry (women‘s) and citro/polar blue (men‘s).

White is the first colour we immediately associate with winter. It is considered the absence of colour, the complexion of purity, of innocence. And for mountain climbers, white evokes images of trackless, tempting, slopes of deep snow. But what happens when a ray of light from the glistening winter sun strikes a particular shape of ice crystal? What happens when an ice crystal becomes a prism? That is when the mountain world reveals one of its greatest secrets. The spectrum of light appears. Glistening white turns to iridescent colour. We suddenly realise that the non-colour white contains the sum of all the colours. For the coming winter, the SALEWA design team have let themselves be inspired by this phenomenon. The colours of the rainbow run through all the collections and product lines of SALEWA, the experts in highly functional mountain sports apparel. From fiery orange and pepper red to aurora pink, blossom and raspberry, from glacier-blue cobalt, through the polar blue of the winter sky, and its darker companion fjord, on to yellow and green shades like citro, chlorophyll and pine, - harbingers of the coming spring.

The R&D department in Bolzano worked with the young free ski mountaineers from the international SALEWA alpineXtrem team to specify colour accents. Picture someone battling their way upwards through rock and ice, using high altitude equipment and alpine safety rope systems, to be able to ski down through narrow couloirs or steep north flanks. Such a person needs to be seen. Safety is the number one reason. The colour preferences of the free ski mountaineering team were: chlorophyll/ aurora pink/ raspberry for women, and fjord/polar blue/citro for men.

We hope that nature acknowledges this homage to one of its great wonders, and thanks us with plenty of pure white.
